Le journaliste fondateur de Mediapart Edwy Plenel était l’invité du dîner débat d’Entreprises et Medias d’Alsace organisé comme chaque mois à l’Hôtel Mercure Gare de Mulhouse. Devant la bonne centaine de membres du Club et de leurs invités, il a défendu les thèmes qui lui sont chers depuis toujours : le journaliste doit être un militant, indépendant du pouvoir et prêt à en découdre avec lui, en révélant des affaires et en enquêtant sur les abus de pouvoir et autres conflits d’intérêts de ceux qui nous gouvernent.
Edwy Plenel a démontré que le type de journalisme qu’il défend est celui qui plaît au public, en témoigne le succès de Mediapart, son site d’information en ligne. Ce site s’est en partie révélé au grand public grâce à l’affaire Bettencourt, et compte aujourd’hui 49.000 abonnés, 36 salariés dont 25 journalistes, après avoir franchi son seuil de rentabilité en octobre 2010. Selon lui, ce succès démontre aussi qu’on peut inventer de nouveaux modèles économiques sur le net, et que la presse papier papier généraliste (dont la presse quotidienne régionale) est dépassée.
Il a bien sûr été question de son dernier livre : »Le Président de trop »; qui est l’aboutissement de 30 ans de prise de pouvoir grandissante du Président, véritable déni de démocratie.
Une insurrection civique, oui mais par qui ?
Edwy Plenel appelle de ses voeux une insurrection civique en considérant qu’on est arrivé à un point de rupture, le parti au pouvoir ne représentant que 7% des inscrits aux dernières cantonales. Ce pouvoir n’est plus légitime et il faut revenir à une assemble constituante forte et respectée. Cependant il ne va pas, comme Stéphane Hessel (Indignez-vous) et Edgar Morin (La Voie), proposer de nouveaux modèles de société ni même la critiquer. Il reste dans son rôle en se limitant volontairement à surveiller les hommes au pouvoir et traquer leurs tricheries et leurs mensonges aux dépens du bien commun.
Même s’il le fait bien, il ne fait que cela. Est-ce que ça suffit pour susciter l’insurrection d’un public qui, à part se délecter des scandales en lisant Mediapart et hausser les épaules en disant « tous pourris », continue à vaquer à ses activités ? Prenant l’exemple de Jean-François Kahn, qui a choisi une option différente, il dit vouloir rester dans le questionnement, pas dans les réponses à apporter. Or, le public d’aujoud’hui est en recherche de sens, une fois qu’on a posé les bonnes questions, ce serait bien que quelqu’un apporte des réponses.
Autre chose : quand un journaliste passe tout son temps à jouer le rôle de sentinelle pour surveiller les hommes politiques, a-t-il le temps d’enquêter sur ce qui se passe ailleurs ? Aujourd’hui, on ne parle que de ceux qui nous gouvernent, de leurs frasques et leurs petites phrases, de leurs fraudes fiscales et de leurs voyages débiles, et surtout de cette campagne électorale qui va prendre toute la place dans les médias pendant un an !
Je pense que le meilleur argument pour éveiller la prise de conscience d’un individu, c’est bien de lui parler de lui, de ses voisins, de ses amis ou collègues et de la vie sociale en général… Comment vivent les gens ? On connaît par les médias la vie des people et des politiques par coeur, mais pas celle de son voisin, dont l’actualité est moins « banquable » sans doute.
Qui créera le Mediapart de la vie des gens ordinaires, qui parle de l’agriculteur qui gagne 450 euros par mois, de l’employée à petit salaire, du prof heureux de travailler en ZUS, du chômeur qui trouve (ou ne trouve pas) de boulot ou encore des réussites de nos artisans et PME dont on ne parle jamais, sauf dans les revues spécialisées ?
La presse quotidienne régionale pourrait-elle jouer ce rôle de révélateur de la vie réelle, en -dehors des activités sportives, associatives ou institutionnelles relatées au fil de leurs pages ? Cela supposerait qu’elle soit un peu moins politiquement correcte, car dans toutes les régions, il se passe des choses dont la PQR ne parle jamais. Ce changement de cap pourrait être sa planche de survie… car, comme le dit Edwy Plenel, la crise actuelle de la presse est une crise de l’offre et non de la demande. C’est une crise du contenu, de la libre expression, du parler vrai et peut-être aussi d’une forme de courage.
Finalement, ce sont les journalistes qui devraient se lancer les premiers dans l’insurrection civique qu’Edwy Plenel appelle de ses voeux…
