Les lectrices des romans psychologiques de l’américain qui triomphe en Europe sont venues nombreuses pour écouter sa causerie avec le journaliste Jacques Lindecker, puis ont fait la queue pour des dédicaces à la foire du livre de Saint-Louis, entre Mulhouse et Bâle. Mais qu’est-ce qui fait courir les fans de l’auteur ?
Pour avoir lu tous les livres de Douglas Kennedy, je peux dire que j’ai toujours été bluffée par sa finesse : « comment peut-il savoir aussi bien ce que pense le personnage ? Et comment peut-il connaître cette femme à ce point ? » Cet extra-lucide de l’âme humaine fait preuve d’une distance et d’un humour appréciés lors de sa conférence au Salon du Livre de Saint-Louis : pas de doute, il ressemble bien à l’idée qu’on se fait de l’auteur en le lisant… Il était venu présenter son dernier livre paru en France, un récit de voyage en Egypte, distancé et ironique comme il sait bien le faire. Mais on n’est pas là dans le cadre d’un roman psychologique sont il s’est fait une spécialité, mais dans les tout débuts de l’écrivain au début des années 80, lorsqu’il démarrait dans l’écriture avec des récits vécus.
Son fil d’Ariane par la suite est devenu le changement de vie le basculement du destin. Ses personnages qui changent de vie suite à une erreur, une décision ou un coup du destin diffusent l’idée qu’on peut (doit/devrait/pourrait ?…) vivre une autre vie que la sienne… et là, Douglas Kennedy touche la corde sensible des femmes, « bovarysantes » à des degrés divers…
Ceci dit, il me fatigue un peu depuis La femme du Vème, où l’auteur fait appel au fantastique pour résoudre une énigme psychologique, je me suis sentie flouée par cette pirouette. Malheureusement, je n’ai pas pu m’en plaindre auprès de l’auteur, la queue des fans ayant eu raison de ma patience, et j’aurais quelque peu gâché le consensus béat qui régnait…
J’attends donc la suite des aventures de ses personnages du quotidien… qui en sortent toujours, pour le meilleur ou pour le pire. Le prochain roman devrait se dérouler à Berlin, l’une des quatre villes de résidence de l’auteur, avec Londres, Paris et le Maine (USA).
Enfin, bravo à la foire du livre de Saint-Louis qui sait fait venir les auteurs régionaux, tout comme les gros vendeurs de livres. La diversité des auteurs, le nombre de libraires et l’affluence du public témoignent de l’intérêt pour le livre. Les clés du succès ? Certainement, la simplicité de cette manifestation très « pro » mais conviviale et sans chichis, avec entrée libre et un vaste parking. Le Salon du livre de Paris quant à lui s’est nettement essoufflé cette année. Comme quoi, en province, on n’est pas si mauvais que ça…
